Department of Seed Science and Technology

The Department of Seed Science and Technology came into existence in the College of Agriculture, Raichur during the year 1992-93 under the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad for under graduate students. Then started Post Graduate programme during 2008-09 and Ph.D programme during the year 2012-13. So far 80 students have completed M.Sc (Agri) degree programme and seven students have completed Ph D degree programme. Presently 17 students are pursuing their master degree and six students are pursuing their Ph D degree programme. In order to carry out PG research, elite seed testing laboratory with high capacity walk-in room germination facility and well developed 6 acres of land for PG research and seed production activities have been created. The recognition of department by VGST K-FIST programme boosted the infrastructure and environment.

Teaching 

The department is offering the courses in Seed Science and Technology for under-graduates in Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Master’s and Ph.D. degree programmes in Seed Science and Technology.

Research

Research on various aspects of Seed Science and Technology especially on quality seed production, processing, testing, storage, seed quality enhancement, cultivars purity testing etc. in cereals, millets, fibre crops, oil seeds, pulses, forage crops, vegetable & flower crops, medicinal plants and tree crops is being undertaken to cater the needs of seed industry and farming community. Another milestone of the department is serving the farming community by producing high quality seeds of sunflower hybrids, castor hybrids, pigeonpea, chickpea, groundnut, jowar, safflower, paddy and vegetable crops under revolving fund project. Many research projects sponsored by Department of biotechnology, New Delhi , Rashtriya Krishi Vihkas Yojana , ICAR and NHM from Government of Karnataka were helpful in developing technologies and laboratory.
