The College of Agriculture, Raichur has total of nine hostels out of which four are boys hostels and remaining five are girls hostels. All the hostels are equipped with wi-fi facility, solar water heaters, CC TV surveillance cameras, steam cooking facilities, R.O. water purifying system along with uninterrupted power supply system (50KV Generators), reading room, TV hall and parking shed for vehicles. All the hostel rooms have been equipped with cots, tables, cup boards and chairs for majority of the students. Each hostel has been provided with neat and tidy dining hall.
The College of Agriculture, Raichur has both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in agriculture. A total of 800 students are persueing their studies and some of them are day scholars. The College of Agriculture has started at Raichur under UAS, Bangalore during 1984 and then the students were accommodated in the Agricultural Engineering Institute hostel and staff quarters. The kitchen and dining hall was made of tin shed.
The Nisarga and Udaya boy’s hostels came in to existence with proper dining hall and kitchen during 1986 and 1990 respectively with a capacity of 63 students each and in each of the rooms three students were allotted. The intake of girl students was hardly any and there were no girl’s hostels. During mid nineties, a few girls entered agricultural education system and they were mostly day scholars.
Post graduate degree programme was started in five departments during 1995-96, the girls intake has increased and working women hostel came into existence (funded by District Administration, Raichur) in Raichur campus during 2000 with a capacity of 35, accommodating 3-4 students /room. To cater the needs of PG students, Krishna PG boy’s hostel came into existence during 2004 with a capacity of 100 students accommodating 2 per room. Gradually over the years, student’s strength increased and to accommodate them, Tungabhadra Girls hostel came into being during the year 2006-07 with well furnished kitchen, store and dining hall facilities for 60 students. A few more PG programmes were added with higher intake for UG programme and there was further demand for girl’s accommodation and the working women hostel accommodation and Tungabhadre was just sufficient to accommodate girl students and working women. Later, the accommodation capacity was improved by undertaking the construction of first floor of Bramarambha girl’s hostel (working women hostel) during 2013-14 and Tungabhadre girls hostel phase II during 2014-15 with a capacity for 60 students.
Hostels and College are within a range of 800 meters and Raichur city is 4 km away. Under emergencies, UAS, Raichur has earmarked a vehicle with a driver (with phone number made available to warden) and student has to consult respective wardens to avail the facility. Medical officer would visit UAS dispensary on daily basis and the student and staff can utilise the services. The medical officer would be available for consultation over phone during odd hours. A pharmacist is placed at campus and students can access his services under emergencies on doctor’s advice. General upkeep of all the hostels would be done on every sunday and hostel premises on fortnightly basis under Swachchtha Abhiyana. A bio-digester plant has been commissioned at Thungabhadra girl’s hostel to address the wastes generated in the hostels of the campus.
Doctoral degree programmes was started in six major departments during 2010-11 and by then UAS, Raichur has been formed and PhD students were accommodated in PG Krishna hostel (Boys) and Bramarambha hostel (Girls). After formation of UAS, Raichur the intake for B.Sc. (Horns) Agriculture, master’s and doctoral degree students increased besides admitting foreign students. To cater the accommodation needs, UG boys hostels; Prakruti, Varuna, New Krishna PG hostel and international student’s hostel have been constructed and extended with all major facilities.
During 2014-15, there was phenomenal increased strength of girls into agricultural education and to accommodate them, Udaya and Nisarga boy’s hostels have been converted into PG girl’s hostel with proper modifications, facilities and security arrangements.
Bramarambha, Tungabhadra phase I & II, Udaya and Nisarga hostel facilities and accommodation are for both Agriculture and Agriculture Engineering girls students and at present 350 girl students belonging to agriculture discipline have been accommodated in the above hostels along with 12 staff quarters.
Looking to girl strength, a new girl’s hostel is being constructed with a capacity of 100 by the side of Tungabhadra hostel. In boys hostels front, Prakruti and Varuna hostels IInd floor construction work would be completed by the end of December 2017. In addition, 35 students capacity PG boy’s hostel for SC and ST students is under construction and the work will be completed by 2018.
