Department of Agricultural Economics

The Department of Agricultural Economics started functioning from 1985-86 with Dr. L. B. Hugar as Asst. Professor. The Department was offering five courses to B.Sc. (Agri.) and two courses to DAE (Diploma in Agril. Engineering) degree programmes since beginning and later on two courses to B. Tech (Agril. Engg) degree from 1989 onwards. Presently, six courses including Fundamentals of Agril. Economics, Agril. Finance and Co-operation, Farm Management, Production and Resource Economics, Agril. Marketing, Trade & Prices and one elective course on Agribusiness management are being offered to B.Sc. (Agri.) degree under semester system as per the recommendation of the fifth Deans’ committee recommendations in tune with the changing scenario of agriculture. The postgraduate programme leading to M.Sc. (Agri.) in Agricultural Economics was started in 2008-09 with an intake of four students and the Ph.D degree programme in Agricultural Economics was started in the year 2012-13 with Mr. Mathias Unim Ushunde from Nigeria as the first student to be enrolled.

The Departments of English and Statistics were merged with the Department of Agril. Economics during 1986 with the establishment of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad.

The faculty members of the Department are actively engaged in research activities. As a result of sustained efforts, several adhoc projects were sanctioned with lateral funding which enabled strengthening of infrastructural facilities and manpower of the Department.

Frequently short courses are conducted in the department. To name one on “Modern Marketing Methods for Agricultural, Horticultural, Animal Husbandry and Fishery products” during 2017-18.
